Prairie area agriculture
Field crop producers on the prairies of Idaho and Lewis counties raise crops with high input costs, variable crop prices and high risk from a variety of sources. Producers need appropriate research-based information to help them remain competitive in today’s agriculture. UI Extension designs and implements a field crop producer education program that includes traditional agricultural Extension program components, such as:
- Variety test plots
- Applied research and demonstration studies
- Tours
- Newsletters
- Schools, educational meetings and individual consultation
Local research and demonstration projects have included hard red spring wheat fertility/quality, nitrogen utilization, micro-nutrients, cover crops and variety trials for all of the major crops grown on the Camas Prairie. Annual educational events include the Prairie Area Cereal School and Crop and Conservation Tour.
Farm financial management
Farmers and ranchers manage businesses and operate in a high-risk environment. The UI Extension farm management education program offers educational opportunities for farmers and ranchers to improve their business and risk management skills.
Many of these educational programs have been offered through the Targeting Financial Performance series, which includes several programs that qualify for FSA Borrower Training credit. Examples of Extension farm management programs include:
- Tilling the Soil of Opportunity for Agricultural Entrepreneurs
- Management Mondays
- Planning for Profit
- Cultivating Success
- Farm Management 101
- Right Risk
- Keeping the Legacy Alive: Estate and Succession Planning
