    Natural resources

UI Extension, Lemhi County provides education and resources related to noxious weeds and rangeland management. Contact the UI Extension, Lemhi County office at lemhi@uidaho.edu or 208-742-1697 for information on current classes and programs.

Lemhi County consists of 2,931,136 acres, of which 92% is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and State of Idaho. The majority of ranchers run cattle on public grazing permits on both Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service lands.

Lemhi County has 47,159 acres infested with noxious weeds. Noxious weeds do not recognize fence lines or property lines and are therefore a universal problem.

    Noxious weed education

Everyone has a responsibility to control noxious weeds on their property and to do their best not to spread weeds. There are a number of opportunities to learn about noxious weeds. Some of them include the weed night at Cattlemen’s Winter School, online pesticide class in March and December.

If you are trying to control your weeds and do not know what weeds you have, you are welcome to bring a plant sample, including root and flowers, to the UI Extension, Lemhi County office to have it identified. We will help you determine the best control method for the weeds you have at your location.

    Range

The majority of the ranchers in Lemhi County graze their cattle on public lands during the summer. Educational opportunities and resource assistance is offered to producers utilizing public lands in the form of workshops and directories. Range topics are covered as part of the Cattlemen’s Winter School each year.

Specialized workshops on the various forms of monitoring are hosted on an as requested basis. There is also a directory available of qualified people who will do contract monitoring. Contact the UI Extension, Lemhi County office for more information.
